The Camera

My Camera Equipment

  • Olympus Camedia C-5050 Zoom
  • Laser AF Video Deluxe Super Wide Macro 0.45xxx Lens
  • Assorted Filters, Gadgets, and, of course, a Tripod
The Olympus C-5050 is my second Olympus digital camera. I moved up to the C-5050 from a C-3000 last summer. I have been using these digital cameras since Christmas 2001. I spent that Christmas in Florida, and used both my film and digital cameras because I did not yet totally trust the digital. After that trip, the film camera was put away in the closet, and I have not used it at all.

Prior to using the Olympus C3000 Zoom, I had an Agfa digital camera whose highest resolution was 640x480. Although it was fun to have, I never got hooked on digital photography until I received the C-3000 for Christmas, from my husband.

I added the Laser Wide-Angle lens to my equipment last March, while vacationing, in Florida. I went into a camera shop to replace a lost lenscap, and came out with the lens. This was one case where a fast- talking salesman gave me some really good advice. With this lens, I can capture the scenic shots that I could not get before.

In order to add lenses to the Olympus C-series cameras, it is necessary to add and adapter (Olympus CLA 1 Lens Adapter Tube) and step rings. Rather than purchasing these items from Olympus, a a premium price, I found a website that offers equivalent items, at a pretty good savings. Anyone with an Olympus C-series camera should invest in the adapter tube, if for no other reason than to be able to add a UV lens. This lens provides not only basic UV filtering but also protects the cameras built-in lens from damage.

The website is Photosolve, and, in addition to offering accessories for sale, I was able to get advice, from the proprietor, before making a purchase back in my C-3000 days. This website has grown over the last couple of years and is well worth a visit by digital photographers.

Finally, a word about batteries... The Olympus C-series can use either the proprietary battery packs from Olympus, or AA batteries. I opted, early on, to use the AA batteries. My investment in a battery charger, and several sets of NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries. There are any number of places to buy the chargers and batteries, but I chose Thomas Distributing, because they had the best article explaining the differences between various battery options.

    My Photos

I prefer taking pictures of things rather than people. The 'things' I photograph can be anything that catches my eye. I am a great fan of the macabre, so cemetaries are prime photographic candidates for me.

    Cemetary in the Snow

New Haven CT - Cemetary in the Snow
It snowed here in Connecticut on Monday, January 12, so I made a couple of quick stops while driving to work. I pass a cemetary, in New Haven, along the way. This shot shows that city crowding is not limited to the living.

    Marsh Grass in the Snow

New Haven CT - Marsh Grass in the Snow
Here is another snow shot taken on Monday, the 12th. This stand of marsh grass separates a parking lot from the driveway into a garage, where I work. In general, snow shots tend to look black and white, even when they are shot in color. The white snow really shows off these very neutral colored plants, and the snowy atmosphere does a great job of muting the dark brick building across the street.

    Nursery School in Winter

    Nursery School in Winter
From the photos I have posted so far, you would think that I just love the snow and winter. Far from it! The only good thing about the snow in New England is it provides some really interesting photo opportunities, and I do love my photo ops!

There is a nursery school right next door to me. I find it paradoxical to see all their outdoor play equipment poking out of the snow. I took this one this morning, January 15.

    A Perfect Red Rose

    A Perfect Red Rose
I love roses! Whenever the opportunity to photograph them arises, I take my shot. This rose is just one of a beautiful bouquet that one of my collegues received from her husband, for their 14th wedding anniversary.
